FDA Identifies New Cyclospora Outbreak Linked to Unspecified Product
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the identification of a new cyclospora outbreak linked to an unspecified product. The FDA is conducting a traceback investigation to determine the source of the outbreak. This development is part of several ongoing investigations into cyclospora outbreaks across the country, including one associated with iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, which has led to thousands of illnesses in states such as Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. Cyclospora is a parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 1,645 confirmed cases since May 1, with 141 hospitalizations. However, state health departments have reported higher numbers, indicating potential underreporting.
