Inflation Drives Up Costs for Wisconsin's Iconic Fish Fry Tradition
In Wisconsin, the traditional Friday fish fry, a beloved local custom, is facing challenges due to rising food costs driven by inflation. Anchor Bay Bar & Grill in Biron, Wisconsin, has experienced a significant increase in the price of fish, with suppliers raising prices three times in the past seven months, totaling an 8% increase. Co-owner Drew Hamel attempted to absorb these costs to maintain the quality of the meals without passing the burden onto customers. However, in late July, Hamel announced a $2 price increase for the fish fry, emphasizing the commitment to quality over cost-cutting. This situation reflects a broader trend, as the Consumer Price Index indicates a 3.7% increase in the cost of dining out from June 2025 to June 2026.
