Frequent Nighttime Bathroom Trips May Indicate Underlying Health Issues and Increase Fall Risk
Health experts are warning that waking up more than once a night to use the bathroom, a condition known as nocturia, could signal underlying health problems. While a single nighttime trip is common, repeated occurrences, especially for adults over 50, warrant attention. Dr. Ali Dabaja, a urologist at Henry Ford Health, defines nocturia as waking at least twice during eight hours of sleep to urinate. Dr. Jeffrey Chester, medical director of The Ohana Luxury Addiction Treatment Center, emphasizes that a sudden increase in nighttime urinary patterns, or changes that disrupt sleep, should be discussed with a physician. Factors contributing to nocturia can include alcohol and caffeine intake, fluid consumption timing, and certain medications. Additionally, sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome can play a role. Experts also highlight that frequent nighttime bathroom visits significantly increase the risk of falls, particularly for individuals with mobility or balance challenges.
