Research Identifies Organic Waste as Primary Methane Source in Uganda, Proposes Solutions for Emission Reduction
New research indicates that Uganda could significantly decrease methane emissions by transforming its organic waste into valuable resources such as food, fertilizer, and energy. The study, which combined national waste modeling with input from communities, government, and industry, highlights practical strategies including composting, biogas production, and Black Soldier Fly treatment. These methods aim to curb emissions while simultaneously supporting agriculture, energy access, and climate resilience. Organic waste constitutes the largest portion of municipal solid waste in Uganda and is a major contributor to methane when it decomposes without oxygen.
