American University Funds Nine Independent Newsrooms by Former Voice of America Journalists
American University has launched the Freedom Media Innovation Lab, providing $420,000 in seed funding and a year of incubation support to nine independent newsrooms. These newsrooms were founded by journalists who previously worked for Voice of America and the U.S. Agency for Global Media. The initiative aims to help these journalists establish credible and financially sustainable news organizations in regions where press freedom is often challenged. The first cohort of the lab participated in a four-week bootcamp covering lean startup methods, AI for media operations, financial modeling, and brand storytelling. Following the bootcamp, they pitched their ventures to a panel of judges, with evaluations based on impact, market need, sustainability, and team strength. Each funded venture receives between $35,000 and $50,000, along with ongoing support from the university through the end of 2026.
