UFCW Testifies at Senate Hearing on Surveillance Pricing Impact on Consumers and Workers
The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) International Union recently testified at a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on the implications of surveillance pricing and electronic shelf labels (ESLs) in grocery stores. The hearing, titled 'Your Data, Their Profit: The Consumer Cost of AI Surveillance Pricing,' was led by Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin. UFCW Policy Counsel Hillary Caron highlighted the potential misuse of ESLs, which are integrated with store systems to adjust prices based on consumer data and AI, potentially leading to higher costs for consumers. The testimony follows New Jersey's recent ban on such technologies, reflecting growing concerns over privacy and consumer rights.
