Nonprofit Sector Strengthened by Strategic Dissolution of Organizations
In the face of political and financial crises, nonprofit leaders are considering strategic dissolution as a means to strengthen the sector. Traci Lester, former president of The Opportunity Agenda, shares her experience of leading the organization through a structured wind-down process. The decision to dissolve was made to preserve the organization's legacy and contribute to the larger social justice ecosystem. The process involved engaging the board, staff, and funders in scenario planning and developing a sunset strategy with legal counsel. Intellectual property was transferred to aligned organizations to ensure continuity of the organization's work.
