Amazon's New Data Center Raises Environmental Concerns
Amazon is investing in a new gas-burning power plant in Pecos County, Texas, to support its West Texas data center. According to The New York Times, the facility, known as GW Ranch, has been permitted to emit up to 33 million tons of CO2 annually, potentially making it one of the largest greenhouse gas producers in the United States. The plant, equipped with 35 natural-gas turbines, will generate 7.65 gigawatts of electricity, primarily for the data center, and will not initially connect to the state’s power grid. This development comes as Amazon continues to face scrutiny over its rising emissions, despite its Climate Pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
