Virginia School Board Faces Lawsuit Over Blocking LGBTQ+ Student Group
The ACLU of Virginia, along with the Potomac Law Group, has filed a federal lawsuit against the King George County School Board for preventing the formation of a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at King George Middle School. The lawsuit claims that the school board's actions violate the First Amendment and the Equal Access Act by discriminating against the GSA while allowing other noncurricular student groups to operate. The school board had implemented a policy banning all noncurricular organizations at the middle school level, effectively targeting the GSA. Despite this policy, other noncurricular clubs, such as an outdoor club, continue to function. The lawsuit seeks to allow the GSA to form and operate on equal terms with other student organizations and to prevent the school board from enforcing discriminatory policies.
