Indian Techie Dies in California from Rare Valley Fever Infection
Chiranjeevi Kolla, a 37-year-old Indian tech professional based in Walnut Creek, California, passed away on May 5, 2026, after battling a severe case of Valley Fever. This rare fungal infection, caused by inhaling spores of the Coccidioides fungus, severely impacted his lungs and led to respiratory failure. According to a GoFundMe post by his cousin, Kolla had been in intensive care for nearly a month before succumbing to the illness. Valley Fever is most commonly found in dry soil in parts of California, Arizona, and other southwestern U.S. regions. While most cases result in mild or no symptoms, severe infections can occur, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems. Kolla is survived by his wife, Pavani Marella, and their five-year-old son, Vihan. The family has launched a fundraiser to cover medical expenses, funeral costs, and future support for his son.
