Mayor Kirk Watson Advances 'Best Place to Be a Kid' Initiative in Austin
Mayor Kirk Watson of Austin is spearheading an initiative titled 'Best Place to Be a Kid,' which aims to integrate and strengthen existing systems for children and families across the city. This effort builds upon a successful community-driven property tax increase in Travis County, approved two years prior, specifically to fund childcare for children aged 0-3 and afterschool programs. This tax increase generates $75 million annually, which has been instrumental in expanding available childcare seats, increasing teacher salaries, improving the quality of early childhood education, and establishing lasting infrastructure for these services. The 'Best Place to Be a Kid' vision is not a new program but rather a comprehensive framework designed to enhance the effectiveness of current systems through collaboration among elected leaders, the business community, and early education advocates, notably United Way's Success by Six.
