US Weather Forecasts at Risk Amid Budget Cuts and AI Challenges
The United States is facing potential challenges in weather forecasting reliability due to budget cuts and shifts in data collection strategies under the Trump administration. According to The Guardian, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has implemented artificial intelligence (AI)-powered models to enhance forecasting efficiency. However, these models rely heavily on historical data and have shown limitations in predicting extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Experts warn that reductions in NOAA's budget, including a 40% overall cut, have led to scaled-back satellite and weather balloon launches, as well as diminished ocean buoy networks. These reductions coincide with the anticipated impacts of a 'super El Niño,' which is expected to drive record-breaking heat and potentially increase hurricane activity. NOAA plans to release its 2026 Atlantic hurricane season outlook later this week.
