Meta Faces Scrutiny from Indian Parliamentary Panel Over Algorithmic Bias and Content Moderation
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, faced intense questioning from an Indian parliamentary panel regarding its content moderation practices and alleged algorithmic bias. The scrutiny arose after a temporary removal of a video by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Facebook, which Meta attributed to a technical glitch. The panel expressed concerns over Meta's adherence to Indian laws, especially given the company's significant revenue from the country. Members questioned the platform's accountability, particularly in the context of objectionable content remaining accessible while 'genuine' content is removed. Meta has apologized for the incident, but the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology found the explanation inadequate. The panel also raised issues about the effectiveness of Meta's algorithms in detecting deepfakes involving the Prime Minister.
