Wise to Restore Accounts of UK-Based Hong Kong Activist Finn Lau After Sudden Closures
Financial company Wise has announced it will reactivate three bank accounts belonging to Finn Lau, a UK-based Hong Kong pro-democracy activist. The accounts, which include one for the diaspora news outlet Points Media, were abruptly closed last Friday, with Wise citing internal policies and agreements with banking partners. Lau, who is wanted by Hong Kong police on national security allegations with a HK$1 million bounty, stated that the reactivation is pending final confirmation. His Hong Kong passport was canceled in June 2024 under the city’s Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, a move he described as transnational repression. Points Media, founded in 2023 by former Hong Kong journalists now in the UK, uses one of the business accounts for daily operations, including payments for Amazon Web Services and Google Workspace. Lau appealed the closures, emphasizing the disruption to essential payments and financial submissions.
