Georgia Wildfire Doubles in Size, Evacuations Possible
A rapidly expanding wildfire in southern Georgia, known as the Highway 82 fire, has doubled in size over the weekend, according to local officials. The blaze, which was first identified on April 20, is currently affecting Brantley County, located approximately 100 miles southwest of Savannah. As of April 27, the fire has engulfed over 20,000 acres and is only 6% contained. The situation is exacerbated by record-breaking drought conditions in the Southeast, which are fueling the flames and contributing to poor air quality across the region. Firefighters are actively battling the blaze, which has led to road closures and destruction of homes and buildings. Mandatory evacuation notices are being considered, and residents are urged to comply if such notices are issued.
