Oscar-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras and co-director Rachel Lauren Mueller have released a new short documentary titled 'They're Here,' which chronicles the operations of Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, depicts the experiences of residents and the resistance efforts against ICE activities in the city. Poitras and Mueller utilized various forms of footage, including dashcam recordings, ground-level filming, and crowdsourced data visualizations, to reconstruct the tactics employed by a local resistance network to track and counter ICE agents. The documentary aims to portray the reality of living under ICE operations, often employing horror film aesthetics to convey the sense of terror and menace experienced by the community.
