New York State Sees Decline in Reading Proficiency Among 3rd-8th Graders, Prompting Educational Reforms
Recent test scores in New York State reveal a significant drop in reading proficiency among students in grades 3-8, with only 48% achieving proficiency, marking a 5-point decrease from the previous year. In contrast, math scores saw a slight increase, with 57% of students passing. The decline in reading scores has prompted state officials to push for the adoption of the 'science of reading' approach, which is based on evidence about how children learn to read. New York City, which accounts for nearly 40% of the state's public school students, has implemented comprehensive changes in elementary school literacy instruction to address this issue. The state is also transitioning to computer-based assessments, although experts are skeptical about the impact of this change on the test score fluctuations.
