Elevated Wildfire Risk in New York Amid Dry Conditions
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of western and central New York, indicating an elevated risk of wildfire spread due to dry vegetation, gusty winds, and low humidity. Wind gusts are expected to reach between 20 to 35 mph, while relative humidity could drop as low as 25% to 40%. The affected areas include western New York, the Finger Lakes region, and parts of the central and southern tier, encompassing cities such as Rochester, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Jamestown. Additionally, parts of the North Country, including Jefferson County and Watertown, are under similar alerts. The warning is in effect from noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
