Senator Ted Budd Co-Sponsors Bill to Sanction Chinese Officials for Religious Persecution
Republican Senator Ted Budd, alongside Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, has co-sponsored the 'Countering China's Religious Persecution Act' (S.5370). This bipartisan legislation aims to impose sanctions on Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials deemed responsible for severe violations of international religious freedom. The proposed sanctions would target officials involved in arbitrary detention, forced sterilization, torture, and forced labor. The bill specifically names Tibetan Buddhists, Christians, Uyghur Muslims, and Falun Gong practitioners as groups facing severe restrictions on their religious freedom. The legislation also mandates the U.S. Department of State to monitor and report on the CCP's transnational repression of minority ethnic and religious groups. This initiative follows a previous joint effort by Senators Budd and Kaine in March, where they urged President Trump to pressure China for the release of detained Chinese pastor Ezra Jin Mingri, who was subsequently released in July.
