This decision has sparked a debate between KIRO host John Curley and Spike O'Neill. Curley criticized the funding as government-funded 'pity' for a special interest group, arguing that basic services should take precedence. He questioned why tax dollars are being used for this purpose instead of being directed towards general services like road maintenance and policing. O'Neill countered that the funding is a fair use of tax dollars for a community facing hostility in other states, emphasizing that the support is not special treatment but a necessity for equal treatment.
