Uprise RI Utilizes AI Agents for News Reporting, Sparking Journalistic Debate
Uprise RI, a Rhode Island news website, has been publishing articles authored by AI agents since July. These AI-generated stories cover various local government topics, including zoning, school procurement, and criminal justice, under the bylines of non-existent reporters like Kelly Lockhart and Adriana Vossari. The site explicitly labels these authors as 'computing agents — intelligent LLM reporters.' This approach to newsgathering gained wider attention after a Boston Globe media reporter highlighted Uprise RI's novel use of artificial intelligence. While other Rhode Island news organizations have experimented with AI, Uprise RI is noted for farming out entire stories to chatbots. The site's owner, software developer Greg Brailsford, believes this method will become more common in journalism and sees Uprise RI as being 'a bit ahead of the game.'
