Australia's Chronic Pain Crisis Forces Many Out of Workforce, Highlighting Economic Strain
Australia is currently facing a significant challenge with chronic pain affecting a substantial portion of its population. According to the 2026 National Pain Report, one in five Australians lives with chronic pain, which has forced many out of the workforce. The report, which surveyed over 6,000 Australians, found that 42% of chronic pain sufferers have had to stop working due to their condition. Additionally, 57% of respondents reported that their pain has impacted their ability to work, and 72% cited cost as a barrier to accessing necessary healthcare. The report highlights a 'national pain gap,' where chronic pain remains largely invisible within systems responsible for measuring and responding to it, despite affecting millions. This lack of recognition and funding exacerbates the issue, leaving many without adequate support.
