Social Norms Hinder Women's Leadership Roles Globally
UN Women, in collaboration with various partners, is working to transform social norms that hinder gender equality and women's leadership. Despite evidence that women's leadership improves decision-making, women remain underrepresented in political roles globally. Social norms, which dictate what is considered acceptable in a community, often limit women's access to leadership positions. These norms are deeply rooted in cultural and historical contexts, making them challenging to change. UN Women's initiatives, such as the WYDE Women's Leadership Initiative, aim to shift harmful narratives, reform institutions, and strengthen feminist movements to promote gender equality.
