Icelandic Families Face Financial Strain Over Youth Basketball Team Costs
Families of young athletes in Iceland are facing significant financial burdens as they pay substantial amounts for their children to participate in national team programs. Björgvin Þór Rúnarsson, whose son is part of Iceland’s under-20 men’s basketball team, highlighted the issue, noting that expenses for travel, accommodation, participation fees, equipment, and food can amount to the equivalent of a deposit on a small flat. The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland (ÍSÍ) acknowledges the financial barriers and agrees that participation in national teams should not be determined by a family's financial situation. Despite recent increases in funding, the association states that an additional ISK 200-300 million is needed to fully support requests from national sports federations.
