University of Florida Launches MOMitor App to Combat Postpartum Complications in Florida
The University of Florida, in collaboration with the Florida Department of Health, has launched the MOMitor™ smartphone application, a perinatal medical monitoring tool designed to support mothers during pregnancy and after delivery. Developed in 2021 by Amie Goodin, Ph.D., an assistant professor of pharmaceutical outcomes and policy, the app addresses the high rate of preventable maternal deaths and complications in the U.S., particularly in Florida. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, with over 70% occurring within the first six weeks postpartum. MOMitor™ facilitates remote physical and mental health screenings, monitoring conditions such as blood pressure, potential infections, lactation concerns, and blood sugar levels for those with diabetes.
