Severe Storms and Flash Flooding Threaten Eastern U.S., Including New York City
A significant severe weather event is impacting the eastern United States, with 116 million people under threat from flash flooding and severe storms. Heavy rain, damaging winds, large hail, and potential tornadoes are expected as a multi-round storm system moves through the region. Early morning storms have already dropped over 3 inches of rain in parts of New Jersey, southern New York, and Connecticut, saturating the soil and setting the stage for more intense weather later in the day. The main line of thunderstorms is forecast to develop in the upper Ohio Valley and western New York before tracking eastward, reaching the I-95 corridor during the evening rush hour. Rain rates could reach up to 2.5 inches per hour, exacerbating flood risks in vulnerable areas like North Jersey.
