Pentagon Cancels $300 Million Lithium Tender Amid Procurement Challenges
The U.S. Department of Defense has canceled a tender to purchase up to $300 million worth of lithium carbonate for the national strategic stockpile. This decision, effective August 3, 2026, was made by the Defense Logistics Agency, which oversees the defense supply chain. The tender, initially published in early July, sought offers for nearly 36 million pounds of battery-grade lithium carbonate over five years. The cancellation follows previous procurement challenges, including a failed cobalt tender worth approximately $500 million. The agency did not provide specific reasons for the cancellation, but it highlights ongoing difficulties in securing critical minerals at fixed prices.
