Researchers Track Sharks Off Hamptons to Study Great White Nursery and Warming Waters
Researchers are actively catching, tagging, and releasing various shark species off the Hamptons, New York, to gain a deeper understanding of the local shark population and one of the world's few confirmed great white shark nurseries. Marine scientists, including Greg Metzger and Bradley Peterson, are attaching small data collection devices to sharks, which relay information on their location, depth, and water temperature. This research aims to shed light on the behavior and migration patterns of these predators. The data collected indicates that sharks cover vast distances annually, with tags detected as far south as North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico before they return to Long Island waters. The research also suggests an increase in tropical shark species migrating northward due to warming ocean temperatures, likely linked to climate change.
