Madrid Museum Explores Picasso's 'Guernica' Through African Art Dialogue
The Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid has launched a new exhibition series titled 'History Doesn’t Repeat Itself, but It Does Rhyme,' which places Pablo Picasso's iconic painting 'Guernica' in dialogue with other artworks. The inaugural exhibition pairs 'Guernica' with South African artist Dumile Feni's 'African Guernica,' a large-scale charcoal drawing from 1967. This exhibition aims to revisit the universal political themes of Picasso's work while highlighting contemporary issues such as race. 'Guernica,' known for its depiction of state brutality during the Spanish Civil War, is reimagined alongside Feni's work, which reflects the violence of racism during South African Apartheid.
