China's Bond Market Expansion Aims to Diversify Global Financial Channels
China is enhancing access to its sovereign bond market by introducing tools such as bond futures and broader financing mechanisms. This effort is part of a larger strategy to make Chinese government debt more accessible to international investors. The development includes expanding the infrastructure around the renminbi, such as the Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), offshore RMB markets, and swap arrangements. Despite these efforts, the renminbi's global share remains relatively small, with the IMF reporting it represents less than 3% of global trade settlement and approximately 2% of global foreign-exchange reserves.
