UNT's Digital Newspaper Program Expands Texas Historical Preservation
The University of North Texas (UNT) is leading a significant effort in preserving Texas's historical newspapers through its Digital Newspaper Program. This initiative, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and other grants, aims to digitize and provide free public access to millions of historical Texas documents. The program, which began in 1999, has grown to become the largest single-state, open-access newspaper preservation repository in the U.S. Under the leadership of Ana Krahmer, the program collaborates with various Texas communities to digitize newspapers, ensuring their preservation for future generations. The initiative involves scanning and returning original documents to their owners, with digital copies made available for public access.
