Swedish Government Report Projects Four Million Population Decline by 2100
A new report commissioned by the Swedish government indicates that Sweden's population could decrease by four million people by the year 2100. This potential demographic shift is attributed to a combination of factors: low migration rates, a declining birth rate, and an increasing elderly population. Åsa Hansson, an associate professor of economics and the lead author of the report, highlighted to SR Ekot that isolating the effect of a shrinking population would have significant consequences for the Swedish economy. The report suggests that proactive measures are needed to address these trends, particularly focusing on supporting young adults in Sweden to mitigate the long-term economic impact.
