Developers Increasingly Dependent on AI Tools, Raising Quality Concerns
By 2026, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools into the daily workflow of developers has become so pervasive that many refuse to work without them. A report from the METR laboratory highlights this dependency, noting that developers are reluctant to participate in tasks without AI assistance. While AI tools have been credited with increasing coding speed, experts caution that this does not necessarily translate to improved quality. The trend of 'tokenmaxxing,' where productivity is measured by the number of tokens used, is becoming prevalent, but it poses risks to software quality and could lead to increased costs for companies.
