Victoria Labor Proposes Restrictions on AI and Biometrics in Workplace Surveillance
Victoria's Labor government has announced plans to introduce legislation that would restrict the use of AI and biometrics for workplace surveillance. Premier Jacinta Allan and Treasurer Jaclyn Symes outlined the proposal, which aims to ensure that surveillance is conducted ethically and with employee consent. The proposed law would require human oversight in AI-driven recruitment processes and limit the collection of biometric data to situations where no less intrusive options are available. The legislation also seeks to ban the sale of workplace surveillance data and mandates that employees be informed about monitoring practices. The proposal comes ahead of the November 2026 state election, with Labor intending to introduce the bill if they win.
