Electra Completes Historic Advanced Air Mobility Flight Tests at Virginia Heliports

Electra has successfully concluded pioneering flight operations from heliports located on commercial airport ramps across Virginia. These trials, conducted at Roanoke–Blacksburg Regional Airport and other sites, demonstrate the capability of fixed-wing hybrid-electric aircraft to operate from vertical flight areas. The initiative, part of the FAA eVTOL and AAM Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), involved collaboration with the Virginia Smart Airspace Program, Virginia Tech, the Virginia Department of Aviation, and PennDOT. Electra has successfully showcased point-to-point connectivity across Virginia using its ultra-short takeoff and landing (USTOL) aircraft, operating from various non-traditional access points including airport taxiways, heliports, and even a drag strip. These flights, conducted under the FAA’s Advanced Air Mobility Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), demonstrated the capability of Electra’s planned hybrid-electric, nine-passenger EL9 Ultra Short aircraft to provide regional connectivity without burdening congested airport runways. The two-seat EL2 technology demonstrator utilized helicopter-style flight procedures, allowing it to operate from locations historically accessible only to helicopters.
