U.S. DOT Awards $12 Million to Enhance Regional Air Service Connectivity
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has allocated nearly $12 million in grants to 14 communities across the United States. These funds, distributed through the Small Community Air Service Development Program (SCASDP), aim to establish, restore, or bolster regional air services, addressing specific gaps in air connectivity. The grants will support various projects, including the creation of new hub connections, the re-establishment of previously discontinued routes, marketing campaigns to promote air travel, and air service studies. Out of 60 applications received from 32 states and territories, 14 proposals were selected, totaling $11.98 million, significantly less than the almost $49 million collectively sought by eligible applicants. Most of the awards are designed to provide revenue guarantees and marketing support, mitigating financial risks for airlines launching new routes.
