Minnesota State Grant Program Faces $131 Million Shortfall, Impacting College Students
Thousands of Minnesota college students are facing reduced financial aid due to a $131 million shortfall in the Minnesota State Grant Program. This program, which is the largest source of financial aid in the state, has been experiencing budget deficits for four consecutive years. The shortfall is attributed to increased demand and structural issues that lawmakers have not resolved. As a result, 80% of grant recipients may see their aid reduced, with some students losing $1,000 or more. The program's financial challenges are exacerbated by rising college enrollment and changes in federal Pell Grant eligibility.
