Galápagos Wastewater Contributes to Antibiotic Resistance
A study published in Nature Communications reveals that human wastewater contamination in the Galápagos Islands is leading to the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria in the marine ecosystem. Using mobile laboratory-based metagenomic surveillance, researchers found high densities of antimicrobial resistance genes in contaminated sites. The study highlights the role of untreated wastewater in promoting the persistence and diversification of drug-resistant bacteria, posing risks to human, animal, and ecosystem health.
