U.S. Court Orders Return of Deported Raleigh Resident with Special Immigrant Status
José Eliezer Martinez-Andino, a young Honduran man and Raleigh resident, has returned to the U.S. after being deported last spring. Martinez-Andino, who holds Special Juvenile Immigrant Status (SIJS), was ordered to be returned by U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell. He had been living in Raleigh with relatives and is the father of a U.S.-born child. After being detained in March during a trip to Seattle, he was pressured to sign voluntary departure forms and was deported to Honduras in April. His return to the U.S. was facilitated by a court order in June, which also restored his legal status. Martinez-Andino's case highlights the challenges faced by young immigrants with SIJS, especially amid increased deportations under President Trump's immigration policies.
