Rochester Nursing Home Employee Charged with Embezzling $150K from Residents
A Rochester nursing home employee, Tammy Echols, has been charged with stealing over $150,000 from residents at St. John's Home. New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the charges, which include second-degree grand larceny and first-degree scheme to defraud. Echols, who worked as a senior account specialist, allegedly issued fraudulent refund checks to friends and associates, who then returned most of the money to her. The alleged embezzlement occurred between January 2023 and August 2025, with Echols accused of misappropriating $154,525.99 from resident funds. The investigation was conducted by the Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit with assistance from the Rochester Police Department. Echols was arraigned in Rochester City Court and faces a potential prison sentence of five to 15 years if convicted.
