Torrential Rain Causes Flooding in Homewood, IL; Viaduct Drainage Project to Begin June 1
A severe storm on the morning of May 18, 2026, brought heavy rainfall to Homewood, Illinois, resulting in significant flooding at the Dixie Highway viaduct. The storm also caused power outages, downed trees, and broken limbs across the area. According to Homewood Public Works Director Joshua Burman, the viaduct was closed for five to six hours due to flooding and reopened between 4 and 5 p.m. This location has been a chronic flooding issue for years, but a long-awaited drainage system reconstruction project is set to begin soon. Homewood officials announced that construction will start on June 1, with a full closure of Dixie Highway at the viaduct scheduled for June 8. The project is expected to last through October.
