Japan's Cyber Chief Highlights Impact of U.S. AI Export Ban on Security
Japan's National Cyber Director, Yoichi Iida, confirmed that the U.S. AI export ban has disrupted Japan's government security scanning operations. The ban, issued by the U.S. Commerce Department, suspended access to Anthropic's AI models, affecting Japan's vulnerability scanning before the implementation of its Active Cyber Defense Act. This law, set to take effect on October 1, 2026, marks a shift in Japan's cybersecurity strategy, allowing preemptive actions against cyber threats. Iida emphasized the inevitability of integrating frontier AI into Japan's cyber defense, citing the need for rapid response capabilities.
