Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have published a study in Brain Communications detailing improvements in cognitive function and emotional well-being among individuals with long COVID-related cognitive impairment. The study involved a transcranial low-amplitude magnetic field (MMT) intervention delivered via a noninvasive headset. Participants received the therapy twice weekly for four weeks. The triple-blind pilot study randomized 30 participants with confirmed objective cognitive impairment from long COVID, with a 2:1 ratio for active versus sham MMT. The active treatment group showed improvements in working memory, verbal learning, processing speed, and emotional well-being compared to the sham group. Notably, these improvements continued even after the four-week treatment period concluded, extending to the eight-week follow-up. This suggests a potential sustained effect of the therapy. The study also established the feasibility and safety of at-home MMT use.
