Huntsville Celebrates Historic Preservation Month with Focus on Indigenous History
The City of Huntsville, Alabama, is celebrating Historic Preservation Month by focusing on the region's Indigenous history. Throughout May, city leaders and local historians are highlighting culturally significant landscapes that shaped Huntsville long before its founding. This initiative aligns with the National Trust for Historic Preservation's theme, 'Telling the Full Story of America,' and aims to explore histories that have not always been fully recognized. The city is spotlighting places of cultural importance to Indigenous tribes, such as Monte Sano Mountain, Ditto Landing, and Big Spring Park. Mayor Tommy Battle emphasized the importance of understanding and honoring the past to ensure these places remain relevant for future generations. City Preservation Planner Katie Stamps noted the goal is to provide a more accurate and inclusive view of Huntsville's early history by uplifting Indigenous voices.
