Ohio Faces Flooding Risks Amid Resilience Planning
Ohio is addressing resilience challenges, including flooding and extreme heat, as part of a broader initiative to develop pre-approved housing plans for 'missing middle' homes. The project, led by Smart Growth America in collaboration with the Housing Multiplier Project and the Greater Ohio Policy Center, aims to create affordable, energy-efficient housing options that meet local building codes and resilience needs. The initiative includes plans for two-family, three-plex, four-plex, and six-plex housing types, designed for both site-built and modular construction. These plans will be pre-approved for use in three major Ohio cities—Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland—and will be made publicly available at low or no cost. The designs will incorporate features to mitigate flooding and extreme heat, as well as energy efficiency measures such as heat pumps and solar readiness.
