Qualcomm Joins EU Initiative to Build AI Gigafactories, Aims for Tech Independence
Qualcomm, along with other major chipmakers like AMD and Nvidia, has signed letters of intent to supply chips for the European Union's ambitious plan to construct AI gigafactories. The EU aims to raise over €30 billion in state and private funding to build seven AI gigafactories, enhancing its computing independence from non-European governments. The initiative, led by the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, seeks to expand Europe's AI computing capacity, providing infrastructure access to startups, SMEs, industry, academia, and public authorities. This move is part of the EU's strategy to reduce reliance on foreign tech, particularly from the U.S. and China, and to bolster its own technological sovereignty.
