Hurricane Lowell Prompts Closures Across Oahu
Oahu is under a tropical storm warning as Hurricane Lowell, currently a Category 2 hurricane, is expected to pass just west of the Hawaiian Islands late Monday into early Tuesday. The storm is bringing dangerous conditions, including destructive winds, flash flooding, and damaging surf. In response, all non-essential offices, public schools, University of Hawaii campuses, and judiciary facilities on Oahu will remain closed on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Private schools such as Punahou, Iolani, and Mid-Pacific Institute have also announced closures. A hurricane refuge area has been opened at Nānākuli Elementary School for those needing shelter. Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official emergency instructions.
