Trump Administration's Immigration Policies Target Climate-Impacted Nations, Exacerbating Refugee Crisis
The Trump administration has implemented immigration policies that heavily restrict entry from countries most vulnerable to climate change impacts. According to a Guardian analysis, 22 out of 39 countries with restricted entry are among the most climate-vulnerable globally. This includes nations like Chad, Niger, Sudan, Somalia, and Sierra Leone. The administration's policies have effectively shut down the U.S. refugee program, except for white South Africans, and have dismantled overseas aid programs. Efforts to amend U.S. immigration laws to include climate refugees have stalled, despite attempts by Democratic lawmakers to introduce the Climate Displaced Persons Act. This act aimed to provide legal status and resettlement support for those displaced by climate disasters.
