Pet Shop at Center of San Francisco Political Scandal Relocates to Richmond District
Julia Baran, owner of Animal Connection, a pet shop previously embroiled in a significant political scandal in San Francisco's Sunset District, is relocating her business to the Richmond District. The new location at 658 Clement St. is expected to open by mid-September, following a five-year lease agreement. Baran is undertaking much of the remodeling work herself, aiming for a "clean slate" after inheriting a store in disarray from the previous owner, Beya Alcaraz. Alcaraz's brief tenure as a San Francisco Board of Supervisors member ended abruptly after Baran publicly detailed the poor condition of the store and alleged under-the-table payments to workers and potential tax evasion by Alcaraz. The move comes amidst ongoing legal battles, including two lawsuits filed by the former landlord against both Baran and Alcaraz, primarily concerning unpaid rent and damages from a severe rodent infestation at the old Irving Street location.
