Potentially Dangerous Chemicals Removed from Detroit Bookstore, Prompting Road Closures
A bottle containing potentially dangerous chemicals was removed from John King Used and Rare Books in Detroit, leading to road closures around the store. The incident occurred on August 31, when a staff member, who had studied chemistry at Wayne State, discovered the bottle while cleaning. Recognizing the potential instability of the chemicals, she moved the bottle outside the store, located on Lafayette Boulevard. The bottle was part of the store's antique collection. Following the discovery, first responders were called, and multiple streets were closed as a safety precaution while crews worked to safely remove the container. Officials identified the contents of the bottle as picric acid and Antimonium Sulphuratum. Picric acid is known to be highly explosive when dry, while Antimonium Sulphuratum is used in diluted forms for certain medical conditions. No injuries were reported during the incident, and the Detroit Fire Department is currently investigating the matter.
